Comfort Colors

Garment-dyed vintage

Comfort Colors owns the garment-dyed, vintage-wash category in US printwear, and its 1717 is the shirt behind most of the boxy pigment-dyed merch you see in the college and boutique markets. The brand is owned by Gildan, which keeps distribution deep, but the product is its own thing: sewn first, then dyed, so every shirt arrives pre-shrunk and already broken in.

Best for
Retail merch trading on a lived-in, vintage aesthetic: coffee shops, breweries, colleges, destination merch.
Watch out
Pigment dye is heat-reactive: keep fabric at or below 320°F through the dryer. Shade variation between dye lots is inherent.
Anchor styles
1717 Heavyweight Tee, 1566 crew, 1567 hoodie.

The styles that matter

The 1717 Heavyweight Tee is the franchise: , 100% US ring-spun cotton, soft-washed and garment-dyed, with a relaxed fit and a tubular body with no side seams. Its enormous palette of muted, earthy, and pastel shades is the real product; nobody else matches those colors.

The same dye palette extends across the line's long-sleeve and fleece companions, so a merch capsule can stay color-consistent across pieces.

Fabric & print behavior

Pigment dye sits on the surface of the fiber and is heat-reactive: keep fabric temperature at or below 320°F through the dryer and verify with temp strips, or shades can shift and scorch. White ink on garment-dyed cotton also needs care; test before the production run.

Shade variation between pieces and dye lots is inherent to the process. Set that expectation with the customer up front; it is the vintage look they are paying for.

When to choose Comfort Colors

This is the blank for retail merch trading on a lived-in, vintage aesthetic: coffee shops, breweries, colleges, destination merch. It costs more than Hanes ComfortWash, the main garment-dyed alternative, but the 1717 is heavier ( vs 5.5), boxier, and has the deeper color range. If the customer says faded, washed, or beachy, quote the 1717 first.

Comfort Colors in our catalog

Our 29 Comfort Colors blanks look like a lot, but they're 4 lines. Each line is one fabric, sold in companion cuts of the same garment.

Heavyweight 11

The 1717 franchise: garment-dyed ring-spun in tee, long-sleeve, pocket, tank, women's boxy, and Color Blast cuts.

Lightweight 5

Summer-weight garment-dyed fleece: crews, hoodies, sweatpants, and shorts.

Garment-dyed fleece 5

The classic fleece companions: the 1566 crew, 1567 hoodie, and quarter-zips in the same dye palette as the tees, so a capsule stays color-consistent.

Bags & headwear 8

Garment-washed totes, a sling bag, caps, and a fleece dorm blanket in the same sun-faded palette as the tees, for a capsule that goes beyond the shirt.
